It’s All Key
Roof windows offer a simple, attractive method of increasing levels of natural light and ventilation into a building. They can also add real value to a property without having to overcome time and cost-consuming building restrictions. A window’s performance, however, is dependent on the quality of its design and fit. With nearly 20 years’ experience in the sector, Keylite is an award-winning manufacturer of quality roof windows specifically developed for rapid, high-specification installation, energy efficiency and a sleek, smart aesthetic. Colin Wells the company’s Head of Technical and R&D highlights five reasons why Keylite is the clear choice when it comes to selecting a roof window which fits and performs as good as it looks.
As their use has become intrinsic to creating healthy, comfortable interior spaces, so roof windows have evolved to keep pace with their growing appeal. Different glazing types, remotely-controlled window and blind options and installations varying in shape and size; there are a wide range of roof window types to suit a host of applications. For installers and the end user, quality is everything when it comes to specification. It is why Keylite has managed to uphold its reputation as a leading roof window manufacturer, with its drive for innovation proving crucial to creating a wide-ranging product portfolio of industrywide renown. Here are some of the not-so key secrets to Keylite’s continued success:
Expanding Thermal Collar
This unique patented innovation presents a fine example of Keylite’s desire to go the extra mile in order to produce roof windows of long-lasting quality. The built-in patented expanding thermal collar helps prevent thermal bridging, which can be responsible for up to 30% of a dwelling’s heat loss.
Thermal bridging in relation to roof window installation is caused by a 20mm ‘adjustment gap’ recommended by all manufacturers. When left unfilled and exposed to cold weather, the gap could lead to condensation forming around the frame. In-turn, mould accumulation is a risk, resulting in aesthetical and physical damage to the frame.
Although a thermal collar is a known solution for preventing cold spots around a roof window frame, most companies sell them as an ‘extra’. For householders on a tight budget, this adds a layer of cost which might not have been accounted for. In certain cases, roof windows have been fitted without thermal collars. This is not to be advised.
Keylite has taken responsibility for insulating around a window by building an expanding thermal collar into the frame. The collar is made from expanding foam, which in a devastatingly simple process, is activated by removing a ripcord covering. With the window frame in position, the foam expands to fill the gap to perfectly insulate around the window for an airtight, waterproof finish. The expanding thermal collar comes as-standard on all Keylite Roof Windows, and at no extra cost to the customer. Solutions such as this perform a vital role in ensuring buildings perform as-designed.
Flick-Fit Brackets
Another Keylite patented innovation, pre-installed Flick-fit brackets remove the ‘pane’ from window installation. In fact, this unique feature allows box-to-roof fitting in minutes. Flick-fit brackets are pre-fitted to the window frame, a key factor to the product’s rapid-install properties. It means the applicator has only to select the type of roof covering – slate or tile – and ‘flick’ the brackets into place accordingly. This amazingly simple process allows Keylite windows to be installed from the inside of a building with the glazed sash in place, which leads to a safer, as well as faster more efficient fit.
Sash Hinge Finger Springs
Removing a sash from a window is not difficult, even for non-experts. But reinstalling it can be a challenging experience. ‘Dangling’ finger hinges are a real hindrance to sash installation, due to the hinges’ angle making them very difficult to line up. To solve this issue, Keylite has fitted a patented spring-loaded hinge to its sash, which means it remains in position and slots easily into the frame’s housing in one smooth and easy motion.
Streamlined fit
Each Keylite Roof Window is recessed as standard. Being situated lower in the roof imbues windows with a sleek, streamline aesthetic. Windows cited almost flush to the roof improves the installation’s thermal efficiency thanks to the surrounding insulated elements.
