Top tips for replacement windows
Windows are the focal point of a property – so for homeowners thinking of a refresh or complete change of style, then choosing the right replacement is key.
There can be several indications that it might be time to upgrade or replace windows. This can range from condensation on the inside of the glazing to frames deteriorating.
Our Head of Technical, Colin Wells, says: “There are a number of factors to consider when looking at different styles of windows. From how they impact the overall thermal performance of a home, to how easy they are to fit as part of a project.
“Of course, how much light you want, and the window style are also important in giving your home the right look and feel.”
Planning permission
Planning permission isn’t normally required for replacing windows, except in conservation areas and for listed buildings.
Any roof windows installed must protrude no more than 150mm above the existing roof plane. Keylite roof windows sit some 64.5mm out of the roof on a tile installation and 57.5mm on a slate roof – so are perfectly fine to be installed without planning permission.
Types of windows
Aluminium windows are typically more expensive than uPVC windows. However, many things can influence this cost – meaning a uPVC installation can cost more than aluminium installation in some cases.
Timber windows are extremely costly compared to other double glazed window materials. Only limited carpenters offer replacement timber window frames.
Maintenance and insulation
While it’s always good to maintain windows as per manufacturer’s guidelines, looking after roof windows is essential to maintain performance. This is why Keylite offers maintenance kits to help windows stay as good as new.
Colin adds: “Keylite roof windows come with great insulation and the means of trickle ventilation, which helps to regulate the temperature in a room. This can limit overheating during summer and keep the cold out during winter.
“Keylite is also the only manufacturer to offer an Integrated Expanding Thermal Collar as standard in all its roof windows, at no extra cost. This feature prevents cold spots around a roof window, creating a more thermally efficient and comfortable home.”
Keylite’s double and triple-glazed windows come with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. Click here to see our comprehensive range.
